About Woodturning

SLO MakerSpace has a robust Woodturning station. With two large lathes and a crib full of tools there isn’t much that you can’t create in this space. Marshall has recently added hollowing tools with carbide tips to form vessels like vases.

We have a top of the line NOVA lathe with a 16″ swing to turn bowls with a 16″ diameter. The bed is 24″ long. This lathe has a swivel head mount so if there’s a desire for a project wider than 16″ in diameter the head mount can swivel away from the bed to turn large plates or platters. Our other lathe has a longer bed, but a smaller swing for longer projects.

We have just about every form of accessory for attaching wood to the lathe: drive centers, a face plate, a chuck, and wide jaws for reverse chucking.

We require a Basic Safety Class AND a Spindle Class before using the woodturning area. If you have previous woodturning experience, see Marshall just after any class to demonstrate your skills and if he finds that your skills and knowledge are enough he will pass you on through Basic Safety or the Spindle Turning Classes.

Classes are offered on SAT and SUN, 10a – 12p. See each class below, or the Classes & Events page for the complete schedule.

Meet the Guru

Marshall Mistry

Marshall Mistry

Woodturning Guru

Marshall Mistry was fortunate to have a strong woodturning program at his High School – he took it all four years. In years two-four he became the shop foreman and lead demos in teacher’s absence. Since High School, he has made pieces for passion and for profit selling in boutiques in his hometown and online. Marshall joined SLO MakerSpace and the next day he offered to teach woodturning classes for us as a way of maintaining his passion for this craft and a way to help pass his robust knowledge on to others.

Please note: Due to the holidays, classes on SAT, 12/24 and SUN, 12/25; as well as, SAT, 12/31 and SUN, 1/1/17 are cancelled.
