Laser Cutting and EngravingOur 100 watt laser can cut through and engrave wood, acrylic, MDF, leather, fabric, cardboard, and more up to 1000mm x 600mm in area
About the Laser
SLO MakerSpace has a 100 watt laser cutter and engraver that our members can use during our open hours. It has a 1000 mm x 600 mm working area and can cut and engrave a wide variety of materials including wood, MDF, polycarbonate, acrylic, cardboard, glass, fabric, leather, and more. The adjustable bed can support materials up to 300 mm thick. We’ve found it is capable of cutting through softer materials up to 1/2″ thick and harder materials up to 3/8″ thick though results will vary with your material.
Unfortunately it is bad for the machine to cut and engrave anything with chlorine in it, so no PVC or unidentified (random) plastics are allowed to be used in the machine.
Members can use this machine once they have taken our Intro to Laser Cutting and Engraving class, which can be purchased below.
Meet the Guru

Intro to Laser Cutting and Engraving Class
This class is offered every Monday from 7 to 9pm.
Interested in using the SLO MakerSpace’s 100 Watt Laser Cutter and Engraver? Sign up for this 2-hour long class and you’ll learn the ins and outs of the machine, the software that runs it, and how to make a variety of different projects!
Specifically, this class will cover:
- Safety and components of the machine
- Preparing vector drawings and images for use with the laser cutter
- Testing your material to determine the best cutting and engraving parameters
- Using RDworks (laser software) to specify cutting and engraving parameters for the machine
- Setting up the machine and your material for cutting and engraving
- Common troubleshooting tips and tricks
You do not need to be a SLO MakerSpace member to take this class, though you will need to be a member to use the laser after you have taken the class. Because of the laser’s high power consumption and limited laser tube lifetime, usage is 50 cents per minute of operation time, which you must pay for on the honor system here. We also have commonly used materials for sale at the shop.
STUDENTS: Please bring your PAID receipt to class to show the Guru. Attendees without a proof of class purchase will be required to pay onsite and reimbursed when proof of payment is provided.
Laser Cutter Reservation
You can reserve the Laser Cutter in one hour time slots, up to three slots at a time and two weeks in advance. Note: If you do not show up within 15 minutes from the time of your reservation, your entire reservation is cancelled, and another member has the right to use machine as long as needed.
