About Blacksmithing

SLO MakerSpace is now offering Blacksmithing with our anvil and forge!

We require Blacksmithing – Basic Safety AND Blacksmithing – Beginning Blacksmithing before using the forging area. If you have previous blacksmithing experience, see Boone just after any class to demonstrate your skills and if he finds that your skills and knowledge are enough he will pass you on through Basic Safety and/or Beginning Blacksmith.

Required personal equipment / attire:

  • 100% Cotton Hat or other suitable head covering
  • 100% Cotton Long Pants & Long Sleeved Shirt
  • Leather Boots – NO synthetic materials
  • Leather Welding Gloves – Available at Air Gas or Miner’s Hardware (see photo)
  • Eye Protection
  • Ear Plugs – Recommended, but not required.
  • 2.5lb Wood Handled Sledgehammer – Available at Miner’s Hardware (see photo)
  • Leather Apron – Recommended for Intermediate or Advanced Blacksmiths

Blacksmithing Guru

Boone has been blacksmithing for three years. He spent one year styling under Randy Augsburger in Templeton as well as studied metallurgy and welding at Cuesta College. Boone has a shop and his business in SLO and his passion is for medieval arms and armour and has been ever since his first Renaissance Faire at age 12. Boone is a member of the California Blacksmith Association.

1 OF 2 classes REQUIRED to use the forging area.

1-Hour Class
This class is for people who have never experienced blacksmithing or used a forge. This class is the Basic Safety Class of forging and blacksmithing. Training and overview of common tools, personal protective equipment, safe equipment operations, and personal materials needed for blacksmithing. No forging will be done during this class.

Limited to (5) FIVE attendees. First come, first served.

Blacksmithing – Beginning Blacksmithing

Blacksmithing – Beginning Blacksmithing

2 OF 2 classes REQUIRED to use the forging area.

1.5-Hour Class
This class is for people who have never experienced blacksmithing This class covers the basics of forging. Proper heating, holding, striking, bending, forming, drawing out a taper, and drifting (punching) a hole. This class will provide instruction on crafting a drift (punch) and chisel if time allows. This class must be satisfactorily completed prior to unsupervised work on the forge.

Limited to (2) TWO attendees. First come, first served.

IF you’ve had previous forging instruction or experience and feel confident about your skills, see Boone at the end of any of his classes to demonstrate your skills and he’ll either require this class or pass you through.

2.5-Hour Class (including a 1-hour lunch break)
Tool Making. One of the best things about Blacksmithing is making your own tools. In this class you will be making your own set of tongs. Proficiency with forming, bending, drawing a taper, and drifting a hole are required.
